We are the Local Environment Group for the area around Prestwood in Buckinghamshire, including Great Missenden,
The Hampdens, The Kingshills, North Dean and Speen
We aim to protect and enhance the quality of the natural environment through the involvement of local people.
Prestwood Nature has a database of over 30,000 records for the area, in addition to roughly the same number of (mostly) older records at the Bucks and Milton Keynes Environmental Records Centre (BMERC).
They covered over 5,483 different species. These are continually being added to from members’ casual sightings, dedicated surveys of specific sites, and regular monitoring schemes.
A weekly 2km transect recording butterflies is repeated every year and there are similar continuing surveys of glow-worms and ladybirds. All local ponds have had at least an initial assessment and all have been surveyed for amphibians. Old hedgerows, veteran trees and surviving old fruit varieties are identified and measured. Re-surveying for old plant records and searches for rare butterflies continue each year.
These records enable us to assess different sites in the area and to set priorities for our work. Such surveys, for instance, led to the discovery of a new breeding site for white-letter hairstreak, a national Biodiversity Plan species, and steps are now being taken to protect it.
In 2010 we carried out thorough surveys of all old orchards as part of the nationwide study by PTES (People's Trust for Endangered Species). Full surveys of new sites are carried out on request, and some key sites receive regular monitoring (eg Prestwood Picnic Site).
